How many days do you need in Kyoto?

5 days is the right length for a first trip to Kyoto. That fits Fushimi Inari early, the Arashiyama bamboo grove, Gion in the evening and a handful of temples without temple fatigue. With fewer days you see the highlights at a brisk pace; with more, add a day trip to Nara or Osaka.
